According to the US military department, the ministers discussed "the growing US-Vietnamese relations in the field of defense and regional security challenges." At the same time, the ministers agreed on actions to deepen defense cooperation. This includes, inter alia, "the expansion of naval cooperation and the scale of information exchange." What kind of data is meant, is not specified, TASS notes.
In addition, James Mattis and Ngo Xuan Lit stressed that a rather high-level partnership has already been established between the United States and Vietnam concerning peacekeeping missions and providing humanitarian assistance, as well as operations of maritime border guards of the two countries. In this regard, the US was reminded of the recent transfer to Vietnam of a patrol ship that had previously been part of the US Coast Guard.
The ministers expressed the view that a strong US-Vietnamese relationship in the field of defense contributes to regional and global security.
"These relations are based on mutual respect and common interests, including freedom of navigation in the South China Sea and on a global scale, respect for international law and recognition of national sovereignty," the Pentagon press service said. Mattis welcomed the interaction of Vietnam with other states of the Asia-Pacific region and his growing leadership in this part of the world.
