The Turkish authorities have detained 27 ships under the Russian flag, follow the Black Sea and Mediterranean routes. Ankara argues that the detention had been lawful, and Turkey's actions comply with the provisions of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Memoranda of Understanding, the newspaper Hürriyet.
Nevertheless, the unofficial sources of the publication emphasize that the detention was partly due to the actions of the Russian side, which similarly acted with eight Turkish ships.
Thus, Turkey acted on the principle of reciprocity. The database of the Black Sea memorandum affirms the detention of 18 ships from December 1, including 14 Russian. As reasons for detention, including violations of fire safety, lack of life-saving appliances and pollution of the water area are indicated.
