The ferry Sewol, which sank on April 16, 2014, all this time lay along the south-western coast of the Korean peninsula at a depth of 44 m. The operation to raise the ferry began on March 22, 2017. A day later the hull of the vessel appeared above the surface of the water, but the lift had to be interrupted to dismantle the left rear ramp, which opened during the operation and could prevent the ferry transport. After the ramp was disconnected, the lift continued.

A ferry with a length of 145 m and a weight of about 10.000 tons was lifted to a height of 13 m above sea level by two barges and placed on a semi-submerged vessel. The operation involved 450 people. After that, specialists for a few days pumped out the remains of sea water and fuel. To deliver Sewol to portMokpo, which is 87 km from the place of the ferry's death, it will take up to eight days, and the organizers of the operation expect to complete the transportation until March 31, 2017. Another four days will go to move Sewol into a dry dock.

Meanwhile, at the site of the ferry's rise, divers began to work, who will explore the bottom. The study of the state of the ferry itself will be carried out by specialists whose actions will be coordinated by an independent commission that will work for at least six months. According to the South Korean media, five members of the commission will be approved by the Parliament of South Korea, three more will be nominated by relatives of those killed in the wreck of the ferry. Victims of the tragedy were 295 people, the bodies of another 9 people were never found; perhaps the remains are still inside the ferry.

Preparation for the operation to raise the ferry Sewol began in August 2015. Experts collected the necessary information and developed the appropriate technology. The rise was entrusted to the Chinese company Shanghai Salvage, the operation cost $ 73 million. In mid-March, the South Korean authorities said that everything was ready for the upgrade: under the hull of the ferry there were beams, on which the ship was to be pulled upward. It was planned to conduct the operation in the first days of April, but in the end it was decided not to postpone the process and take advantage of the good weather.

The ferry Sewol , DWT = 6.825, was built in 1994, went under the flag of the Republic of Korea. In April 2014, the vessel flew from the port of Incheon to the island of Jeju. Sewol was South Korea's largest ferry. At the time of the accident, 476 people were on board, 250 of which were schoolchildren on a tour. The reason for the large number of victims is the cowardice of the captain and some crew members, as well as the uncoordinated actions of rescuers. The captain, who left the sinking ship one of the first, was sentenced to life, 14 crew members received a term of 5 to 30 years.

Various assumptions were made about the causes of the accident: the human factor, the technical malfunction, the congestion of the ship. A detailed study of the ferry hull in a dry dock, perhaps, will provide an answer to all questions.
